BLOG TOUR: Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid

MAYBE IN ANOTHER LIFE
By Taylor Jenkins Reid

ABOUT MAYBE IN ANOTHER LIFE:
At the age of twenty-nine, Hannah Martin still has no idea what she wants to do with her life. She has lived in six different cities and held countless meaningless jobs since graduating college, but on the heels of a disastrous breakup, she has finally returned to her hometown of Los Angeles. To celebrate her first night back, her best friend, Gabby, takes Hannah out to a bar—where she meets up with her high school boyfriend, Ethan.

It’s just past midnight when Gabby asks Hannah if she’s ready to go. Ethan quickly offers to give her a ride later if she wants to stay.
Hannah hesitates.
What happens if she leaves with Gabby?
What happens if she leaves with Ethan?

In concurrent storylines, Hannah lives out the effects of each decision. Quickly, these parallel universes develop into surprisingly different stories with far-reaching consequences for Hannah and the people around her, raising questions like: Is anything meant to be? How much in our life is determined by chance? And perhaps most compellingly: Is there such a thing as a soul mate?
Hannah believes there is. And, in both worlds, she believes she’s found him.

Flo's Review
As soon as I heard about this book from participating in the cover reveal, I was intrigued. A lot of people I know -- myself included -- can be the "coulda, shoulda, woulda" types. The ones to ask "What if?" I really liked the premise of this book -- it was kind of like like a Choose Your Own Adventure, but with a more serious tone. Because there was only one choice, and that one choice had a ripple effect in Hannah's life. I believe that everything happens for a reason, so that is how I came into this book.

What I Didn't Like About It: There was a lot of reading through Hannah's -- and Gaby's, her best friend -- thoughts about fate and destiny etc etc. This was kind of the point of the book, but felt just a little too much...not preaching, but kind of preaching? I think I would have preferred if there was a bit more of letting the reader think through this concept herself instead of hearing Hannah's and Gaby's endless thoughts about it.

What I Liked About It: The end. And I don't really want to say too much more without spoiling the book, but I really liked where Hannah ended up both universes and how they both--okay, I have to stop. If you've read it, I think you'll know what I was going to say.

The Multiverse Theory: This is the theory that the story is based upon, as explained by one of the characters:

"...it states that everything is possible happens. That means that when you flip a quarter it comes down heads and tails. Not heads or tails. Every time you flip a coin and it comes up heads, you are merely in the universe where the coin came up heads. There is another version of you out there, created the second the quarter flipped, who saw it come up tails. Every second of every day, the world is splitting further and further into an infinite number of parallel universes, where everything that could happen is happening. There are millions, trillions, or quadrillions, I guess, of different versions of ourselves living out the consequences of our choices."

The Epic Quote: "...I know that may be universes out there where I made different choices and they led me somewhere else, led me to someone else. And my heart breaks for every single version of me that didn't end up with you."
